In our culture, most people know little about acupuncture and even less about its benefits. When confronted with any mention of needles, most care not to venture any further into the unknown. According to Echo Hobbs, a Salem practitioner of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (AOM), the lack of normalizing the process of acupuncture in our society is what keeps many from the benefits of this type of medicine.

Efeitos do Astragalus IV (Huang Qi) na insuficiência cardíaca em ratos (em Inglês)

Abstract
Background: Astragaloside IV (ASI) in Radix Astragali is believed to be the active component in treating heart failure. The present study aims to examine the effects of ASI on cardiovascular parameters in long-term heart failure in rats.
Methods: Using echocardiographic and haemodynamic measurements, we studied the effects of ASI on congestive heart failure (CHF) induced by ligation of the left coronary artery in rats.
Results: ASI (0.1, 0.3 and 1.0 mg/kg/day) attenuated the decline of fractional shortening (FS). The peak derivatives of the left ventricle (LV) pressure (dp/dt) in ASI-treated groups significantly increased. Both LV internal diameters in diastole (LVIDd) and in systole (LVIDs) decreased significantly after ASI treatment (0.3 and 1.0 mg/kg/day). ASI (1.0 mg/kg/day) attenuated the decrease of LV systolic pressure (LVSP). ASI treatment inhibited compensatory hypertrophy of myocardial cells and lowered the number of apoptotic myocytes.

Estudos planeados com ensaios controlados aleatórios não baseados na teoria da Medicina Chinesa são inadequados (em Inglês)

“Abstract (provisional)
Current biomedical research methods to evaluate the efficacy of Chinese medicine interventions are often conceptuality incompatible with the theory and clinical practice of Chinese Medicine. In this commentary, we (1) highlight the theory and principles underlying Chinese medicine clinical practice; (2) use ginseng as an example to describe clinical indications in Chinese medicine; (3) propose a framework guided by Chinese medicine theory for the evaluation of study designs in Chinese medicine research; and (4) evaluate 19 randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trials of ginseng. Our analysis indicates that all 19 trials with both positive and negative results confirm the specific effects of ginseng indicated by Chinese medicine theory. Study designs guided by Chinese medicine theory are necessary to validate and improve future randomized controlled clinical trials in Chinese medicine. ”

Acupuncture outperformed one of the most common non-hormonal drugs prescribed for menopausal symptoms such as hot flashes, in a study conducted by researchers from Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit and presented at a meeting of the American Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology.
“It’s been tested directly against a drug that we use regularly. And it’s more effective,” said lead researcher Eleanor Walker. “It has benefits, as opposed to any side-effects.”
